While publicly-accessible indoor swimming facilities in the UK are on the decrease, outdoor or ‘wild’ swimming similarly is increasingly difficult to access and swimmers face a number of barriers. One local example is the Wharfe river which swimmers have historically used particularly on one section just outside of Ilkley. However, issues with the release of sewage into the river has caused serious consternation and in some cases illness. The Ilkley Clean Water Campaign is pressuring agencies to keep the Wharfe clean and a link to their activities can be found below : https://www.ilkleygazette.co.uk/news/17788345.ilkley-clean-river-campaign-group-keeps-pressure-agencies/
